22/01/2007: Dr Chan advocates for improved female health

Dr Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), addressed members of the Executive Board at the 120th WHO Executive Board session, highlighting six key issues that will guide WHO’s work in the coming year. WCF is enthused to see that the first issue to be addressed is health development focusing in particular on women and the people of Africa. Dr Chan sees women as agents of change and therefore critical to meeting the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

Up to half a million women and three million newborn babies die each year in pregnancy and childbirth or soon afterwards, the majority of them in Africa and South Asia. For every woman who dies at least twenty more suffer complications which leave them with lifelong disability and pain.
