22/09/2009: Women and Children First asks the World Bank President to support free health care for women and children

In the run-up to the UN General Assembly side event ‘Investing in Our Common Future: Healthy Women, Healthy Children’ on the 23 September 2009, Women and Children First has joined Save the Children UK, Merlin and World Vision in writing to Robert Zoellick, the President of the World Bank, asking for an announcement that the World Bank will, in line with its own strategy, provide clear commitment and financial support for countries that want to remove user fees from public facilities. User fees have excluded poor people from access to health services and Women and Children First discourages user fees in maternal and child health care. Read the letter here.

Saving Lives

Up to half a million women and three million newborn babies die each year in pregnancy and childbirth or soon afterwards, the majority of them in Africa and South Asia. For every woman who dies at least twenty more suffer complications which leave them with lifelong disability and pain.

Our unique programmes are saving the lives of mothers and babies every day. We need you to help us to equip women with their most vital survival tool: knowledge.
