Manifesto for Motherhood

The Manifesto for Motherhood coalition is a group of UK-based NGOs, professional associations and civil society networks who came together in 2009 to advocate and campaign for accelerated efforts to meet Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.  Working together, we have been successful in garnering cross party MP support for reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) and in influencing DFID’s latest policy on RMNH, Choices for Women.

Campaigns

One year on since the introduction of the Choices for women: The UK’s Framework for Results for improving reproductive, maternal, and newborn health in the developing world, the Manifesto for Motherhood Coalition wants to know how our government is keeping its promises to women and children in the developing world and encourages the Government to remain dedicated to our international commitments on family planning and a safe pregnancy and child birth.

Submission by the Manifesto for Motherhood Coalition in response to ‘Choice for Women’, the UK government consultation on reproductive, maternal and newborn health

In 2010 DFID ran a public consultation to inform the development of their policy for improving reproductive, maternal and newborn health in the developing world ‘Choices for Women: wanted pregnancies, safe births.’ Views gathered throughout the consultation were assessed by DFID, from online responses to meetings with partners in India, Kenya, South Africa and the UK, and fed into the final formulation of the policy which was published at the end of 2010.

In advance of the 2010 UK general election the Manifesto for Motherhood coalition called on all three political parties to commit to a series of actions
1.  Scale up financing for maternal, newborn and child health.
2.  Place maternal, newborn and child health at the heart of health system strengthening.
3.  Realise the UK’s international commitments on sexual and reproductive health and rights and advocate for other countries to do the same.

Saving Lives

Up to half a million women and three million newborn babies die each year in pregnancy and childbirth or soon afterwards, the majority of them in Africa and South Asia. For every woman who dies at least twenty more suffer complications which leave them with lifelong disability and pain.

Our unique programmes are saving the lives of mothers and babies every day. We need you to help us to equip women with their most vital survival tool: knowledge.
