Tell a Friend

Toddlers cover a mile to save other children's lives

Frances Fraser recently inspired us all by raising over £800 by getting together a group of Mums and Toddlers and organising a sponsored ‘Toddle’ for us in Portsmouth She wrote:

When I had my son Alex last year I was really impressed by the quality of the care I received during my pregnancy, delivery and during the first few weeks of Alex's life. We had midwives, doctors, health visitors and breastfeeding counselors all on hand to help. I was very safe in the knowledge that if there was a problem a simple telephone call would get the help and medical care I needed. I realised that this is not the case for many women and babies around the world. Pregnancy and childbirth can be frightening and I have come to realise how much more frightening it must be if you don't have the right medical care and serious illness or even death is a real possibility.   It seems so unjust that so many women and babies suffer, especially seeing the solutions are often so simple. I thought I would like to do something to help and raise a bit of money to make a small difference somewhere in the world. Through the internet I found Women and Children First and I identified with their values. I was confident that any money I raised would be well spent. Alex and I have made lots of friends in the past year through baby groups and I wanted to do something that involved everyone so a toddle seemed like a good idea! We set about rallying the troops and got together a group of motivated mums and children all set to toddle their way to raise lots of money for a great cause!

We were really impressed by Frances’s commitment to make a difference in the lives of mothers and children in the countries where we work where so many women and children still die in childbirth due to complications which could so easily be solved. Saving Lives

Up to half a million women and three million newborn babies die each year in pregnancy and childbirth or soon afterwards, the majority of them in Africa and South Asia. For every woman who dies at least twenty more suffer complications which leave them with lifelong disability and pain.

Our unique programmes are saving the lives of mothers and babies every day. We need you to help us to equip women with their most vital survival tool: knowledge.
